There has almost been a sort of transferral from brains and memories, to our mobile phones and social media platforms. Vacations, music concerts, weddings and other significant events are today viewed through the live recording of phones, even though the person recording is physically present. That snippet of video then gets posted, shared, "liked." But how much of it remains in the person's head and heart rather than in the digital ether? Not nearly as much, I believe, than if the recording had not been made. "Digital witnessing" is hollowing out our experiences, leaving us emptier and shallower despite those experiences being generally more plentiful and expensive and exotic than those of any previous generation.
